Pizza Night: Tuesday, the 26th

We’ll be having our semesterly pizza night next Tuesday, the 26th, at Conan’s (http://conanspizza.com/central). We’ll have beginning class as usual (6:30 PM to 8:00 PM) and then travel as a group over to the restaurant. Intermediate/Advanced class is canceled for that evening.

  • Beginning Class: Officially begins Tuesday, Jan. 22nd.  Classes will be held, as always, 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays in BEL 904. There will also be classes at those times on 1/15 and 1/17 for returning members and those who want to get a head start.
  • Intermediate/Advanced Class: Regular class times will resume the first week of the regular University Schedule, with the first class on Tuesday, Jan. 15th. As always, classes will be held 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM, Sundays; all in BEL 904
  • “Short Hours” (between-semester classes): There will be “short hours” classes on Tuesday the 8th and Thursday the 10th, 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM in BEL 904

Last day of regular class hours will be Thursday, Dec. 6th.  The last Sunday class for this fall semester will be Dec.  2nd; after that there will be no Sunday classes until January.

There will be classes held during the semester break (“short hours”), Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM in Bel 904.  All are welcome to attend.  These “short hours” will continue up until the end of this semester’s exam period; details on class dates around the holiday break to be determined.

Our semesterly pizza night will be this Thursday, Oct. 11th at Conan’s Pizza (603 W 29th, MAP).  We’ll begin whenever everyone arrives after beginning class, around 8:30 or so.

Beginning class on Thursday will be held as usual.  We’ll then adjourn to Conan’s for the festivities.  Train hard in class so you can work up a good appetite.

The UT Aikido Club presents a seminar with Doug Wedell Sensei

Doug Wedell is a 7th Dan in Aikido who has led seminars in Japan, Israel and throughout the United States. He trained under multiple sensei as an undergraduate, including Robin Heifetz (Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido), Josef Birdsong (Aikido of Austin), and in Chicago, Akira Tohei and Fumio Toyoda. In 1979 he moved to Los Angeles to train for seven years under Rod Kobayashi Sensei, the founder of Seidokan Aikido. Wedell Sensei was one of the first Seidokan yudansha, reaching the level of Sandan in Los Angeles.

A psychology professor at the University of South Carolina, he is the founder of Seidokan Aikido of South Carolina. Under his leadership, the dojo has developed multiple yudansha and provides six classes weekly. Wedell also maintains an active youtube channel on which he regularly posts instructional videos demonstrating fundamental arts and principles of Aikido.

Location: UT’s Thompson Conference Center is located at is 2405 Robert Dedman Drive and it is located on the southwest corner of E. Dean Keeton and Red River, with free parking for non-UTites. L Theo Bellmont Hall is on the western side of the football stadium complex, Room 904. Visitors Weekend visitors should use garage parking or the “C” lots (read signs/avoid “UT permit at all times” spaces if you lack one!). Locker room and showers on the 9th floor Bellmont, past the desk on the left as you exit the elevators. Dojo is farther down that same hallway on the right.

*NOTE: Bellmont opens at 10 a.m. Sat. and 11 a.m. Sunday and sessions will start 15 minutes later.

Beginning class for the fall semester will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 4th. We’ll meet at our usual time: 6:30 PM; and in our usual place: Belmont 904.

Don’t worry if you can’t make the first class (or even the first few). While it’s helpful to start on the first day we’re happy to have you whenever you can come and we’re happy to help you get caught up if you miss the first class or two.
