EVENT DESCRIPTION:

To support and promote the November 2010 University of Texas Press publication of ONE HUNDRED BOTTLES, the acclaimed English translation by Achy Obejas of Cuban writer Ena Lucia Portela’s novel, CIEN BOTELLAS EN UNA PARED (2002), the Austin Area Translators and Interpreters Association (AATIA) will host a literary conversation with translator Achy Obejas.

Portela’s novel, CIEN BOTELLAS EN UNA PARED (ONE HUNDRED BOTTLES), dubbed as “the most brilliant account of the Cuban crisis of the 1990s,” portrays gender-related issues under censorship in a fresh and provocative manner. The novel has won various international prizes and has been published in translation in six other countries.

Translator Obejas will be interviewed by Austin-based Cuban photographer and writer Eduardo Aparicio. A reception and book signing will follow, as well as an exhibit by BookPeople.
