Registration – October 25 at 8AM

October 21st, 2010 · No Comments

All graduate students will be able to register on Monday, October 25th starting at 8AM. Take a look at the Master’s Student Handbook for more details.

Here are a few reminders about registration:

  • Advising Bar – Each student has an advising bar on their file that restricts them from registration.  To remove the bar, contact your faculty advisor and let them know what you plan to take in the Spring.  The faculty advisor will let Hortensia know that you have spoken, and she will remove your advising bar.
  • Registration Information Sheet - Check this website to see if you have any other non-financial or financial bars.  This sheet also lists your GPA :)
  • Course Schedule - Check for core classes under “EDA”.  Common departments for electives include Educational Psychology (EDP), LBJ School of Public Affairs (PA), Social Work (SW), Women’s & Gender Studies (WGS), African & African American Studies (AFR), Asian American Studies (AAS), Communication Studies (CMS), Mexican American Studies (MAS), Religious Studies (RS). Remember, out-of-department electives must be on a graduate level, and other electives can be on a graduate or upper-division undergraduate level.
  • Internships/Independent Study - If you plan on completing an internship or independent study next spring, be sure to fill out the “Consent of Instructor for Course Registration”.  For internships, Dr. Marilyn Kameen (in SZB 210) will review your consent form and internship contract.  For independent study, the faculty member that will supervise your research needs to sign the consent form and look over  your independent study guidelines.  Both documents (consent form and contract) need to be turned into Hortensia in SZB 310 before you will be able to register for the course.

End of the Semester Links:

  • Final Exam Schedule – if your class offers a final exam during finals time, this is the site where you can look up the date, time and location.
  • Grade Report - where grades are posted at the end of the semester
  • Tuition for Next Semester – due by Jan 21, 2010.  Tuition Bill will be ready online in December

Happy Registering!

Higher Education Administrators to Speak on State of Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Event: As part of its fall lecture series, the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE) is hosting a panel featuring Dr. M. Christopher Brown, executive vice president and provost at Fisk University, and Dr. Roderick L. Smothers, vice president for institutional advancement and development at Langston University. The two administrators will discuss “Challenges and Opportunities of HBCUs.”

When: 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29
Where: Main 212

Background: Dr. M. Christopher Brown has served as a full professor and dean at several well-known state universities for two decades, before assuming an executive role at Fisk University in 2009. His current responsibilities include oversight for Fisk’s academic programs and faculty, curriculum realignment, institutional assessment, and student life. He is the author and editor of 15 books and monographs, and more than 100 articles, book chapters, and publications. His research interest includes black colleges, equity and access in higher education and society, and organization and governance in higher education. Brown has also held executive-level positions in the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, American Educational Research Association, and Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute of the United Negro College Fund.

Dr. Roderick L. Smothers has served as vice president for institutional advancement and development at Langston University since 2005. He began his career as a student aid officer in 1996 and steadily moved up the administrative ranks, making him one of the youngest people to attain the position of vice president within the HBCU community. Smothers has secured more than 10 million dollars in corporate and private funding in his work with non-profits. He received his doctoral degree from Louisiana State University and completed his Fundraising Certification from the Center of Philanthropy at Indiana University’s Fundraising School. Smothers has also held positions in multicultural affairs, served as a Dean of College Enrollment Management at the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, and as an Assistant Professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

ProfHacker’s “An Open Letter to Part-Time Graduate Students” provides some excellent advice. I’ve already implemented one of their suggestions – the weekly plan. It’s made a WORLD of difference in my ability to maintain balance. Give the article a read – it’s really good stuff.
