Graduate Assistant Positions Available for 2011-2012

The Office of the Dean of Students has two graduate assistant positions available for the 2011-2012 Academic Year.  Please visit the DoS website (http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/doscentral/gapositions.php#glie) to learn more about the positions and application process.

Greek, Leadership and Intercultural Education (GLIE) is an area in the Office of the Dean of Students that provides educational programs and services in Greek Life, Leadership Development and Intercultural Education. Greek Life provides programming and support to students who are members of sororities and fraternities as well as advising to the six governing Greek Councils. The Leadership and Ethics Institute (LEI) provides a centralized, comprehensive leadership-training program for all enrolled undergraduate and graduate students including both theoretical and practical ethical leadership development. Intercultural Education facilitates a variety of opportunities for the campus community to learn about issues related to diversity, social justice, and inclusion at The University of Texas at Austin.

Greek Life Graduate Assistant position description
• Provide support to the advisors of the Interfraternity, Latino Pan-Hellenic, Multicultural, National Pan-Hellenic, Texas Asian Pan-Hellenic and University Panhellenic Councils as well as Order of Omega.
• Assist with the coordination of Geek Life related programs including, but not limited to Greek 101, The CHANGE Institute, Greek Leadership Retreat, Faculty, Staff, Advisor Reception, and the Greek Awards.
• Assist and support the instructor teams for the Greek Leadership Issues course and the Intergroup Dialogue courses offered by GLIE in partnership with the Department of Educational Psychology.
• Attend Greek, Leadership and Intercultural Education as well as Office of the Dean of Students meetings, programs, activities and events when appropriate.
• Research other Greek Life and Intercultural Education programs and initiatives at peer institutions.
• Assist with general office duties as assigned (i.e. front area reception, area operations assistance, etc.).

Leadership and Ethics Institute (LEI) position description
• Assist in advising the LEI Student Leadership Team.
• Assist with the coordination of area programs including, but not limited to The CHANGE Institute, LEAP and Leadership Series, Swing Out awards process, and the annual Evening of the Stars ceremony.
• Assist and support the instructor teams for the Ethics and Leadership course, and the Intergroup Dialogue courses offered by GLIE in partnership with the Department of Educational Psychology.
• Attend Greek, Leadership and Intercultural Education as well as Office of the Dean of Students meetings, programs, activities and events when appropriate.
• Assist in developing and coordinating area outreach efforts to provide resources and training to the campus community.
• Research other Leadership Development and Intercultural Education programs and initiatives at peer institutions.
• Assist with general office duties as assigned (i.e. front area reception, area operations assistance, etc.).

We are looking for volunteers to be the leaders of the Higher Education Administration Student Personnel Association (HEASPA) for the 2011-2012 Academic year.  If you are interested, please email Evelyn (emeisell@gmail.com) by Thursday, March 23 at 5PM with your name, degree program, year in program and area(s) of HEASPA you would like to work with.  Various areas of HEASPA could include:

Remember, HEASPA is what current members make of it, so in order for our department to have a strong student organization it is crucial for members to volunteer. Craig and I will coordinate a discussion with all leadership volunteers, and get a plan of action started for 2011-2012.  Many thanks for participating in HEASPA, and we look forward to its continuing growth in the next year!

March 31 – Brown Bag lunch with Dr. Cantu

Graduation Information – Deadline March 24

1. Apply for graduation by THURSDAY, MARCH 24:

2. Graduating CUSPA students can participate in The Graduate School Convocation Ceremony on Saturday, May 21 at 9AM: http://www.utexas.edu/ogs/student_services/convocation/

  • Master’s students do not participate in the College of Education graduation ceremony.
  • Tickets are not required for The Graduate School Convocation
  • Commencement is the University-Wide celebration for all graduating students. This ceremony is on Saturday, May 21 at 7PM on the South Mall. Tickets are not required, but seats are first come first serve for your families/friends.

3. If you plan on participating in the graduation ceremony, please purchase your regalia at the COOP: http://www.universitycoop.com/

Legislative Day 2011 – Tuesday, March 22

Students from the Invest in Texas campaign invite you to join them for Legislative Day 2011.  Students will meet at 11AM on Tuesday, March 22 in the Student Activity Center (SAC) Legislative Assembly Room and then walk to the State Capitol to hold a press conference and meet with lawmakers.

If you will be missing class for this event, the Office of the Dean of Students will provide documentation for your professors.
