Rainbow Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving LGBT student who aims to participate in a high-quality, rigorous education abroad program. Applicants must meet general Fund for Education Abroad scholarship eligibility requirements & preferences. Students interested in being considered for this annual scholarship should indicate this through their application forms.

Deadline: The application will open in October 2012 (the deadline in 2011 was November 14) for students planning to study abroad in the 2013-2014 academic year.

Funding Amount: up to $10,000

Number of Scholarships Awarded: up to 10

Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled as undergraduates in US universities/colleges who plan to study abroad for at least four weeks between September 2013 and August 2014. Fund for Education Abroad awards are intended to support students planning to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs in the 2013-2014 academic year or summer 2014. The financial support for these scholarships is provided by generous donors, who are committed to increasing study abroad opportunities for dedicated American students.

This scholarship is made possible by the generous support of a group of international education professionals who are committed to advocating on behalf of LGBT students. These professionals counsel international and study abroad LGBT students and support their LGBT colleagues in the field. Many of these educators have come together through groups created with the support of NAFSA and the Forum for Education Abroad.

The Glimpse Correspondents Program

The Glimpse Correspondents Program is for talented writers and photographers with a passion for storytelling and a knack for finding truly unique stories. The program is open to anyone who will be working, volunteering, or studying outside of their home country for at least 10 weeks. Correspondents receive the following benefits:

Glimpse Correspondents work closely with editors to develop a carefully crafted portfolio of published work. Throughout the editorial process, Correspondents receive critical feedback on their work and learn how to develop ideas from initial queries and drafts into compelling, publishable long form pieces.

The Correspondents Program offers the opportunity to get into the thick of the editorial process: to see how stories are developed and crafted; to engage in dialogue about writing, editing, and storytelling; and to consider one’s work from fresh, critical perspectives.

Cell Phone Weighs Down Backpack of Self-Discovery: Dalton Conley

When I was 18, I did what many middle-class American college students have done ever since air travel became broadly accessible: I backpacked through Europe on a rail pass. Much cheap wine was consumed. Many beautiful European women were chased (unsuccessfully). Many hard-earned savings were spent at discotheques.

My buddies and I spent most of the time together, but on occasion we split up to travel through different cities with plans to rendezvous at an American Express office in northern Italy.

During my time alone, I slept on a beach in Spain, in a public park in Genoa and on the marble floor of the fascist-built Milan train station. I read Dostoevsky. Most of the time that I was on my own, I was miserable. I hurried through meals self-consciously. I sat in public parks and wrote in my journal. And I only occasionally made new acquaintances at the hostels.

Meanwhile, I spoke to my parents perhaps once a week from a public phone bank. I hurriedly told them I was alive and made sure everyone back home was, too. The conversation would take less than five minutes, and that was pretty much it when it came to communication. After all, there were better things to spend my money on.

Visit with Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board Chair Tom Healy

As Board Chair, appointed to the Board directly by President Obama, Tom Healy plays a key role in shaping Fulbright policy and representing the program to the world.  He is a dynamic personality and has personal global connections, including with Presidents Obama and Clinton, with world leaders and with Fulbright Commissions across the globe.  Furthermore, he is a very good at helping others to make good connections.

Agenda:

2-3 PM: Interested students, Fulbright alumni, interested faculty scholars and non-U.S. Fulbright scholarship students discuss what the program has to offer and the sharing of experiences with the program.

3-4 PM: Senior scholars (faculty) discuss ideas for recruitment of high quality scholars to participate in Fulbright opportunities abroad at the research or teaching level.

Undergraduate Student Grants for Travel to Brussels

The European Union Center of Excellence at UT Austin is pleased to offer grants to three UT Austin undergraduate students to travel to Brussels in the summer of 2012 through the EUCE Brussels Program. The trip is funded through the support of the European Commission and organized by the Network of European Union Centers in the U.S.

All UT undergraduate students may apply and may be from any discipline. Special consideration will be given to those in a program or major that study some aspect of the European Union.

Funding includes round-trip airfare to/from Brussels, five nights of hotel and some meals.

The 2012 trip will be June 17-June 22 (arrive June 17, depart June 22). The agenda is currently being organized but should be similar to previous years (see agenda on website).

Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on April 20, 2012. No late applications will be accepted.

Students must provide a UT transcript (can be unofficial) and one letter of recommendation from a UT faculty member. More information is printed on the application forms.

Fulbright U.S. Student competition opens May 1

Milton Glaser is the artist most famous for creating the “I ♥ NY” symbol. He went to Bologna, Italy in 1952 on a Fulbright to “learn how to draw”. In this video, Mr. Glaser discusses Fulbright – “the most profound experience of your life” – and his career.

The Fulbright U.S. Student program is open to graduate students at all levels, undergraduates who will have completed their degree by the beginning of the grant period (for most countries, Sept. 1, 2013) and non-students who hold a bachelor’s degree.  The program is restricted to U.S. citizens.  The grants are for study and research abroad, and are available for most countries.  Grants are awarded for all disciplines, including the social sciences, humanities, and the performing and creative arts.  A number of countries also offer grants for those who wish to serve as English teaching assistants.The UT application process opens on May 1 for the 2013/2014 academic year. Get a head start!

Deadlines and Procedures:

1.  Potential applicants must register with us, by sending an email to:
 Fulbright at austin.utexas.edu.  The email should give the applicant’s name,
contact information, academic status (i.e., undergrad, grad, alumnus),
country or region of interest, and area of study or research topic.

2.  The applicant should go to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program website
 http://us.fulbrightonline.org/home.html) for country summaries,
information about preparing an application, and, starting May 1, to begin
the online application process.

3.  The applicant should also review our campus website:

4.  Campus Deadline: The applicant must submit copies of all application
materials electronically to our office by September 5. Interviews are
tentatively scheduled between September 17 and September 28.

New RTF study abroad brochure available

rtf-study-abroadIf you are an RTF major, and have thought about integrating a study abroad experience into your studies at UT, but aren’t sure where to start, pick up a copy of the new RTF study abroad brochure.

The document introduces a number of study abroad options that will allow you to focus on taking courses directly related to your major while you are abroad, and provides a sample degree plan to help you see how you can study abroad and also stay on track for graduation. Use this as a planning tool with your academic advisor, and explore some of the options by attending an information session for your program of interest. Please note that many other options are also available, so feel free to conduct a search on the study abroad portal with RTF included under “area of study.”

The brochure is the first in a series, as the College of Communication Office of Student Affairs, each of its academic departments and the UT Study Abroad Office continue to collaborate on a study abroad curriculum integration project that will highlight some of the special opportunities that are available for each of the majors in the College.

RTF students Sheri Alzeerah, Ben Hanks, Will Cox and Karen May all contributed to the RTF brochure. Next time you see them around, be sure to ask them about their study abroad experience!

Freeman-ASIA scholarships for study abroad

If you are considering study abroad this summer or fall to East or Southeast Asia, consider applying for a Freeman-ASIA scholarship. These are for undergraduate students (U.S. Citizens or permanent residents) with demonstrated financial need.
