It gives us great pleasure to welcome you to the International Forum organized by the CLAVIS: Center for Latin American Visual Studies, Department of Art and Art History at University of Texas at Austin, 15-17 October 2010, in collaboration with the Universidad Autónoma de México and in association with the Universidad de Barcelona.
The forum is a pioneering event in the field of Latin American visual studies and its participants include graduate students, artists, art historians and critics from UT and from Latin America. We will share three extraordinary days of sessions to get to know and discuss the most recent research on Latino/Latin-American Art. Document Downloads

ART ⇔ ARCHIVES: LATIN AMERICA AND BEYOND
The archive and its uses have concerned modern art and modernity writ large. At the crossroads of various epistemologies, and germane to the articulation of discourses, archives act as vehicles for research projects (both artistic and academic). They generate fictions poised between the well-kept secret and the open source. In the last several decades, there has been a marked return to questions involving the archive, particularly concerning Latin America. Given that authoritarian regimes throughout the region have often suppressed or destroyed archives, and because there has been negligence in terms of stewardship, it has become especially salient to return to the question of the archive, no longer as a luxury, but as a matter of political urgency. The forum will address how archives are constructed at various levels, from the national and international, to that of a research project or as part of artistic practice, as well as its use in exhibition displays.
The forum will consist of a series of small, parallel working sessions in order to engage participants in collective discussion and exchange.

November 15: Deadline for submitting the final version of your paper for publication
We received proposals from: current PhD candidates; those who have received their PhDs within the past three years (approximately); emerging independent scholars, with equivalent research experience. Deadline for proposals was due on March 8th, 2010.
The final paper/presentation: To keep within the scheduled time frame for the array of exciting panels we request that the page count of the papers exceed no more than 7 pages (250 words per page). Each participant will have 10 minutes to present the main argument and major claims to his or her paper. This will permit a variety of dialogues and conversations that are the unique feature of this research forum. Conference presentations will be centered on generating a discussion.
Participation on the forum requires that you submit a final abstract of your paper (250 words)along with your CV in narrative (150 words). the deadline for sending both abstracts and CVs is June 20. By participating on the forum you agree to have the following published on our website: CV, abstract ad the final version of your paper to be presented by November 15 (maximum 10 pages double spaced). MAterials not in keeping with these guidelines cannot be included in the publication.
Language: Please state whether the paper will be presented in English at the Forum. We will accept presentations in Spanish and Portuguese. The abstract should be submitted in English.
Travel funds: All travel grants have already been allocated for those who submitted a request along with proposal meeting the guidelines.

*The Permanent Seminar on Latin American Art (under the auspices of CLAVIS –Center for Latin American Visual Studies) is an initiative, organized by Professors Andrea Giunta and Roberto Tejada upon their arrival to UT in September 2008, with the support of the Department of Art and Art History and the College of Fine Arts. Focusing on Latin American and U.S. Latino art, the permanent seminar is an open-ended research space dedicated to the creative production of knowledge; participants include graduate students, artists, art historians and critics from UT and from Latin America.

*The Research Group Typologies critical in the study of contemporary artistic practices: Identity, Micropolitics and Archives of the Department of Art History at the University of Barcelona has developed one of its lines of research on contemporary theoretical contributions to the notion of file, with a section on file usage by different contemporary artists, expanding the geographical area of study cases developed not only in Europe or North America but in Latin America from case studies that support the thesis that revisitation of the file can be considered a global phenomenon.
