Helping the East Coast spring back from Sandy

sandy-space_2382471b

When catastrophes strike, our hearts go out to all those who suffer. Rarely is there an event of national significance that does not touch people in the UT family — alumni, students, and families of students, faculty, and staff. Such is the case with Sandy, which has claimed 56 lives in the United States as of this morning in addition to 67 lives in the Caribbean. New York and New Jersey were hit hardest and our prayers are especially with our many friends and alumni there. UT currently has 662 students from those states and 10,000 alumni now living there.

But in this day and age, we can do more than offer our sympathy; we can reach out and help immediately. I encourage you to support shelters and the cleanup and recovery efforts with donations at redcross.org, salvationarmy.org, or a charity of your choice.

Citizenship is a value we impart to our students every day. And there’s no greater part of citizenship than compassion. I’m never prouder of UT than when Longhorns band together to make a difference. Please help.
