UT Austin up four places to 26th in world according to Center for World University Rankings

The vision we are pursuing at UT Austin continues to be validated by international analysts and publications. Today, the Center for World University Rankings, based in Saudi Arabia, released its list of 100 best universities, and UT Austin ranked 26th, up four places from last year’s ranking of 30th. This aligns closely with our Times Higher Education ranking of 25th in the world.

UT Austin is the seventh-highest-ranked American public university on the list, the top four spots of which were claimed by University of California System schools: UC Berkeley (7), UCLA (16), UC San Diego (20), and UC San Francisco (22). Wisconsin (23), Illinois (24), and UT Austin (26) round out the top seven. Other Texas universities to make the top 100 include UT Southwestern Medical Center, Texas A&M, and Rice.

The overall rankings were calculated from combined scores in six areas: publications, influence, citations, patents, faculty, and alumni employment. Of those, UT Austin ranked the highest in patents (20th) and faculty (24th), which measures the number of prestigious international prizes faculty members have won. As I’ve said before, this illustrates how important attracting and retaining top faculty is beyond the primary benefit of having great teachers and researchers. Faculty quality drives rankings, rankings build reputation, and a rising reputation attracts students, professors, and staff of an ever higher quality. We should all be engaged in encouraging this benevolent circle.
