Monday, November 28, 2011 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm in SAC 2.120.
David Hidalgo is the driving vocal and guitar force of East LA’s Los Lobos and Latin Playboys, the former of which took border-hopping cultural collisions onto the world stage with a series of chart-topping songs and albums. Marc Ribot (ex-Tom Waits, ex-Lounge Lizards and just plain excellent guitarist) is the ex-leader of downtown NY’s The Prosthetic Cubans (i.e., Los Cubanos Postizos).
Their musical excursions across the borders between cultures, styles and genres were the perfect preparation for their ambitious new project, Border Music. West Coast meet East Coast, real meets prosthetic, and guitar meets guitar in a rocking post roots pan Latin rave up/descarga. Together, Hidalgo and Ribot have forged a unique partnership where immigrant neighborhoods meet intellectual nuance – creating truly new music to stir the heart, challenge the head and move the body.
Hidalgo and Ribot will participate in a conversation that discusses their newest collaboration, Border Music, as well as their approaches to performance and music, and the metaphor of the border.

James Tatum, Aaron Lawrence Professor Emeritus of Classics at Dartmouth
3 pm in Jessen Auditorium (Rainey Hall: HRH) on Friday, November 18
This is the opening event in a weekend trio of events celebrating the life and work of our dear colleague, Douglass Parker (1927-2011), Professor of Classics at UT from 1968 until his retirement in 2007. Poet, translator, playwright, trombonist, and parageographer nonpareil, Professor Parker fired the imaginations and warmed the hearts of students and colleagues for more than five decades, while playing – in every sense of the word – a leading role in the modern revival of ancient Greek and Roman comedy.
