May 28 – June 1, 2013, Austin, TX

The Center for Sustainable Development is excited to announce the launch of the Design Futures Public Interest Design Student Leadership Forum which will take place this summer at the School of Architecture. Registration is now open for the event and seats are limited. For UT Austin students, the CSD and School of Architecture in collaboration with the Diversity Council are generously providing a few needs-based scholarships in order to waive the cost of registration. You will find a download link to the scholarship application at the end of this message. Details about the event, including registration, costs, and a general agenda poster are included below. We would encourage you all to visit the Design Futures webpage for more information: http://soa.utexas.edu/csd/PID/forum/index.php

If any of you have friends or colleagues in other colleges and schools outside of the School of Architecture at UT Austin who you think would be interested in this opportunity, please feel free to forward this message to them. We are asking to have all applications for the scholarship positions be submitted to us by Friday, April 19.

Please click this link to download the application. Fill out the application, save the file, and then email it back to the CSD’s email address at: csd@austin.utexas.edu . The deadline for the applications is Friday, April 19.

Background of Design Futures Forum:
Much of the considerable growth in the Public Interest Design (PID) realm is being driven by students and young practitioners inspired to become empathetic, engaged, and thoughtful contributors to/stewards of the built world. Many of the top schools of design and planning are now offering some curriculum-based opportunities to engage with communities – whether local, national, or international – who would not otherwise have access to the design and planning services they so greatly need. Yet, the depth of these experiences is often not sufficient for those hoping to make this field their career path, and these experiences are typically leaving leading students hungry for more opportunities to further develop their skill sets. Further, these students are eager to develop a network of peers with similar leadership proclivities, and to connect directly with those doing PID at the highest levels.

As part of a broader effort to support the maturation of this field and to respond to the significant demand for transdisciplinary training, we have developed an intensive summer learning experience for students interested in PID that will be hosted at a different University each year. The five-day forum will pair these future leaders with the current leaders in the field, as well as similarly impressive future leaders in their peer group, and will give students an opportunity to learn more about this model of design and planning practice and how they can incorporate it into their future studies and professional lives.

Forum brief:
The Design Futures Forum will be held at UT Austin from May 28 – June 1, 2013 for the first iteration of the event. Tulane University is slated to host the forum in 2014. The forum will then rotate to a different institution each year.
Top students from multiple universities will come together in a single learning experience, participating in interactive working groups and informal breakout discussions with each other but also with real community partners in the city of Austin.
The forum will bring together high profile PID practitioners and teachers from around the globe where they will present their work and experiences in lectures as well as work directly with students during the extent of the event. There are twenty speakers on the list as of today, but the list will continue to grow in the coming weeks. Check the Design Futures Forum webpage for a list of speakers.
Each student registration fee is $400 (optional housing at the UT dorms is another $200, for non UT students). There are scholarships available through the CSD for UT Austin students.
Leadership skills
Community engagement methods / tactics
