Switch Movie Premier at UTES and Windmill Projects

Last week our UTES Little Longhorn 4th and 5th graders were the first elementary school students to see the documentary movie on energy, Switch, by Dr. Scott Tinker. http://www.switchenergyproject.com/screenings.html.

This was a terrific culmination of 5th grade science and social studies units on energy and natural resources, and economics driven by supply and demand. Not only did our students make history by being the first young students to see this documentary, but they also demonstrated an impressive knowledge and understanding of various forms of energy production including: coal, oil, natural gas, bio fuels/biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar, and wind. In addition to research and slide show presentations on these energy sources, 5th graders are learning about wind energy first-hand by building, designing, and testing their own Kid Wind windmills. Take a peek at our pics!

Special thanks to Scott Tinker and the Switch documentary preview screenings for making this special day possible. We all learned so much!
