Trigger Happy

Intrigued by high-speed flash photography, photographer Alan Sailer converted his basement studio into a shooting range, situating sugary sweets in the cross hairs to capture delightful bursts of energy. Blurred and messy, Sailer’s earliest images revealed the detritus of impact, so the artist developed a high speed air-gap flash based on a 1974 Scientific American article. The air-gap flash managed to capture with visual precision the instant of bullet-object contact resulting in crisp, dynamic photographs.
